Torsten Bell MP secures future of Swansea’s Civic Centre with £20 million UK Government investment
Swansea’s iconic Civic Centre is to be revitalised after Torsten Bell MP secured a £20 million investment from the UK Labour Government to rejuvenate the landmark building. The funding follows months of campaigning by the Swansea West MP.
The money will see the Civic Centre undergo a dramatic transformation. The plans, drawn up with Swansea Council and development partners Urban Splash, will see new cafes, bars, shops, apartments, workspaces, and areas for leisure and events open, including an aquarium and a saltwater lido.
The funding is the latest in a series of new UK Government investments in Swansea, including a £20 million pot from the Pride in Place scheme and commitments to rail improvements including the Swansea Bay Metro.
Torsten Bell, MP for Swansea West, said: “Securing this major investment in an iconic Swansea landmark has been a personal priority for me. With £20m funding from the UK Labour Government, this is another big step forward for the city.
“With its prime spot overlooking the splendid curve of our beach, the building is crying out for a new lease of life. And that is exactly what we are going to give it, as we keep investing in Swansea’s future, not just remembering it’s past. Great progress has been made with the opening of Y Storfa and regeneration of the Palace Theatre. Works to improve Castle Gardens and open new offices from the Kingsway to St David’s are also underway. The momentum is real – it's vital we harness it.”
