Torsten secures transformational £20m plus investment for Swansea
Swansea is to receive over £20m in UK Government funding as part of the Pride in Place programme, alongside 8 other Welsh local authorities.
Local people will decide how to spend the money to best meet Swansea's needs.
Funding could be used to regenerate our city centre or high streets, from Morriston to Uplands.
Swansea West MP Torsten has secured more than £20m long-term funding from the UK Government to boost the regeneration and create opportunities for local communities in Swansea. The funding is part of the new Pride in Place Programme.
The fund relies on families in Swansea coming together to submit ideas for how to spend this long term funding, and a call has gone out for people to volunteer to sit on a local board to help coordinate the project.
The money can be spent in new and creative ways on a wide range of regeneration projects, from saving treasured pubs or libraries, revitalising high streets or restoring green spaces. This is about supporting specific projects but more than anything boosting local pride in our city.
Swansea and 8 other Welsh places will each receive £20m over ten years. In addition, every single Local Authority in Wales, including Swansea, will also receive a £1.5m boost to help build pride in local neighbourhoods.
Secretary of State for Wales, Jo Stevens said:
"The UK Government is laser-focused on delivering economic growth and providing opportunity for all and the Pride in Place programme is a key part of us doing that. “
Swansea West MP, Torsten Bell said:
“We have won something rare - a massive, over £20 million, long term investment in Swansea. This is our chance for people to get involved in improving our city, from regenerating our city centre to boosting all our high streets. I want to encourage everyone to get involved in how this investment in Swansea is spent.”
This investment programme in Swansea will be governed by a local Neighbourhood Board, bringing together MPs, MSs, community groups, business leaders and local authority representatives. It will run over a ten-year period with delivery commencing from financial year 2026/2027.
This funding will add to the ongoing regeneration being delivered by the Welsh Labour Government through the Transforming Towns Programme and Placemaking initiatives.
