Swansea Unites in Support of Ospreys at Packed Public Meeting
Hundreds of Ospreys fans turned up to a major public meeting in Swansea last night to show their support for Ospreys and hear about the latest developments in the fight to save the team. The meeting was called by Swansea Council leader and MS candidate Rob Stewart, and Swansea West MP Torsten Bell and was attendees by figures from across the city’s political, civic and rugby communities.
At the meeting, Swansea Council confirmed it has begun early stage legal action is under way in the form of a pre-action letter issued to the WRU, which wants to reduce the number of professional sides in Wales from four to three, and Y11.
Speakers at the meeting included Swansea West MP Torsten Bell, Aberafan Maesteg MP Stephen Kinnock, Swansea Council Leader Rob Stewart, and representatives from supporters’ clubs and the wider rugby community. Ospreys supporters spoke of their frustration and anger at the potential demise of their club as a regional rugby team at a packed Brangwyn Hall in Swansea. All stressed the same message: the WRU must pause its current plans, be honest with communities, and recognise that its leadership and approach are no longer commanding confidence.
Torsten Bell, MP for Swansea West, said: “It was great to see so many Ospreys fans making their voices heard tonight. The sheer number who turned up shows just how much people love their club - and how much they hate a stitch up.
“There was overwhelming support for the legal steps being taken by Swansea council. The message to the WRU is clear: think carefully and think again.”
