‘At last’: Swansea West MP helps ensure Swansea features heavily in long-awaited rail investment pipeline

The inclusion of major Swansea projects in a pipeline of long-awaited rail upgrades have been secured by Swansea West MP Torsten Bell, as part of a generational investment from the UK Government into Welsh railways.

As well as UK Government backing for major improvements including the electrification of the main line beyond Cardiff to Swansea Mr Bell, a Treasury minister, has helped to ensure the crucial Swansea Bay Metro was included in a £14 billion investment pipeline which also includes a new station in Cockett.

The investment will see the rail network across Wales modernised, creating 12,000 jobs and providing a vital boost to local economies and communities.

Torsten Bell, MP for Swansea West, said: “Swansea has been let down by years of underinvestment in our rail system. I’m proud to play a part in putting that right, with the UK and Welsh Labour governments working together to drive forward a pipeline of rail improvements that crucially include the Swanea Bay Metro and the electrification of the mainline to Swansea.

“As a Treasury minister, securing this major step forward for Swansea has been a top priority for me from day one.”
