Swansea West MP presses M&S for staff support and a new store in Swansea
Torsten Bell MP has called regional and national M&S figures for urgent talks in Swansea, following the announcement that its city centre store will close as part of a new national strategy for the firm. The move has prompted widespread dismay, with hundreds of residents already signing a grassroots petition.
That meeting took place today. The MP focused on two issues, urging the company to do more to support the staff affected by the likely closure of the current store, and to work closely with Swansea Council to identify a suitable new site to maintain a presence in the city.
Mr Bell said: “The closure of M&S’s city centre store is deeply disappointing. This is a company that has been a major part of life in Swansea for decades.
“As soon as we heard the news, I demanded a meeting with senior M&S representatives. That took place today.
“The immediate priority is for M&S to do everything they can to support the 92 local staff who may be affected, including those who want to transfer into other roles. I also strongly urged the company to work closely with Swansea Council to find a new site in our city, which I am glad to say they are open to.
“This is also the moment to double down on our efforts to regenerate the city centre. Great progress has been made with the opening of Y Storfa, regeneration of the Palace Theatre and success of the Arena. Work to renew Castle Gardens is also underway. A personal priority is securing the funds to ensure the Civic Centre has a new lease of life as we focus on building our city centre’s future, as well as remembering its past.”
